According to the Kyiv Air Force, Russia retaliated against Ukraine on Thursday morning by firing an intercontinental ballistic missile from its southern Astrakhan province. It is the first time Moscow has launched a long-range, potent missile in the conflict.
The airstrike follows Ukraine’s use of missiles manufactured in the US and the UK to hit military targets deep into Russian territory this week, intensifying the battle, which has already lasted 1,000 days.
According to officials who would not reveal the extent of the damage, the intercontinental ballistic missile, which has never been deployed in battle before, targeted vital infrastructure in the city of Dnipro in central Ukraine.
The Ukrainian media reported on Wednesday that the Kremlin was threatening to strike the country with a “massive” new missile in a retaliatory attack for Kyiv’s firing of UK and US long-range missiles at Russian positions.
