A citizen of east Ukraine’s Lugansk area was sentenced to 16 years in jail for “high treason” on Friday, according to Moscow’s FSB security service.
Moscow often imposes harsh punishments on anyone accused of espionage for Ukraine, and Ukrainians have long been imprisoned in Russia and occupied territories.
A military court in Rostov-on-Don, Russia’s southern metropolis, punished an unknown guy.
Prosecutors said he provided intelligence on the Russian armed forces to Kyiv’s security services.
According to Russian news media, the individual was convicted of state treason, being an accomplice in terrorist actions, and illegally handling and transporting explosives.
The court ordered that he serve his term in a high-security prison colony.
The TASS news agency published a video showing the man’s arrest, in which FSB officers stopped a car, dragged a man out and threw him to the ground, before handcuffing him and taking him to the local headquarters of the security force.
The video showed a man with his face blurred — filmed by the FSB — saying he had been recruited by Ukraine’s SBU security service in 2016.
Russia often broadcasts confession tapes recorded by the FSB following arrests.
Moscow’s Ukraine assault has lasted nearly three years.
