Rohit Sharma arrived in Colombo on Sunday to get ready for the three-match ODI series against Sri Lanka, which will take place from August 3 to 7. This will be his first appearance in ODIs since the T20 World Cup in Barbados last month, where he announced his retirement from T20Is.
Suryakumar Yadav and Gautam Gambhir helped India start a new era perfectly by leading the team to a 3-0 victory in the T20I series against Sri Lanka. India won the third and final T20I match in Pallekele via a Super Over, completing their first 3-0 whitewash against Sri Lanka in a T20I series with at least three matches.
In the final T20I, India batted first and struggled early, falling to 30 for 4 in the powerplay and then 48 for 5. Shubman Gill and Riyan Parag added 50 runs together, and Washington Sundar made a crucial contribution, helping India reach a total of 137 on a pitch that favored spinners.
Sri Lanka started their chase slowly but built a good foundation with a 50-run partnership between the two Kusals—Perera and Mendis. However, they faltered in the final overs, unable to score the 9 runs needed off the last 12 balls. Part-timers Rinku Singh and Suryakumar Yadav kept them in check, and Washington Sundar ended their hopes by taking two quick wickets, allowing India to win in the Super Over.
After the match, Rohit Sharma shared a picture from the team’s trophy celebration on Instagram, captioning it: “Perfect start. Well done Team India.”
Rohit’s return marks the beginning of India’s preparation for the ICC Champions Trophy next year.
