After the two dismal performances of the Indian team in two international tournaments, namely, the Asia Cup and T20I World Cup, BCCI summoned captain Rohit Sharma, coach Rahul Dravid, outgoing chief- selector, Chetan Sharma, and NCA chief, VVS Laxman to take the stock of the situation. BCCI top brasses were upset over Team India’s shameful defeat in an ODI series against a low-ranking team Bangladesh. The meeting was held in the afternoon of January 1 in BCCI office in Mumbai.
Prior to it, the four national selectors who were shown the door after T20I WC debacle against England in the semi-final were asked to select Team India for the T20I and the ODI upcoming series against Sri Lanka.
In Sunday’s review – meeting, BCCI wanted to continue with the HITMAN Rohit Sharma as ODI and Test captain. It was unanimously decided by all the BCCI members that seeing Sharma’s past impressive records in ODI and Test cricket, Sharma should be retained at least till the upcoming ODI WC.
In the meeting, Sharma showed concerns over playing – XI players getting injured even after passing the fitness test. It was then decided that Yo-Yo test and Dexa will be an important part of the selection criteria. Issues of workload management and top-ranking players’ availability during international matches were also discussed. It was decided that a pool of 20 cricketers will be drawn and kept ready before any major tournament. It was also decided that emerging players drawn from IPL need to play the domestic season to get eligible for inclusion in the national team.
It was good to observe that BCCI got alerted from its slumber after Team India’s performance in 2022, and it has taken some concrete decisions to revamp Team India before the inswing ODI WC, starting in October this year.
