Rising protests over compulsory hijab in Iran

Iran has been witnessing intense protests against the dictator of the compulsory wearing of a hijab in public. There have been demonstrations for almost 3 months since the death of a 22-year-old Kurdish woman Mahsa Amini in the custody of Tehran’s morality police.  Allegedly she was disobeying the country’s strict hijab dress code for women.

According to Nazil Kamari, an Iranian- Canadian feminist writer, “Hijab is a symbolic thing that has brought women to the front and center. It connects them to all sorts of discrimination that everyone is facing.”

A significant number of women are on the streets continuing to risk death to burn their hijabs and even chop their hair in public. Rising protests are not solely over hijab but they are about controlling women that they are protesting against. Opposition to compulsory hijab is one of many grievances. However, the Islamic republic is giving a deaf hearing to the plight and the demands of women. This is the way to enforce political control and neutralize the opponents. In a recent communication, Iran said it executed two men convicted of allegedly a paramilitary volunteer during a demonstration.
