A record number of applicants for admission to the management programmes of the IIMs and other business schools, 3.3 lakh candidates from across the nation registered for the Common Admission Test (CAT) 2023 two years after the Covid-19 outbreak. Last year, there were 2.5 lakh registrations. On November 26, the test will be administered.
CAT 2023 convener Prof. Sanjeet Singh of IIM-Lucknow, the test’s organiser this year, claims that applications for the test had increased by a record 30% in just one year. In 2022, the increase was 11%.

According to experts, the high numbers show a steadfast student interest in the IIMs and the management industry. Professor Singh continued, “I think increased CAT publicity on social media platforms, addition of more test cities, and an increase in exam centres, particularly in Tier-II cities, have resulted in this highest-ever registration.”
1.17 lakh, or 38%, of the total 3.3 lakh, are female. The number of women registering has increased by 3%. IIMs have made numerous efforts over the past ten years to improve gender diversity in management education. As a result, the percentage of female students at IIMs ranges from 30% to 45%.
CAT was a pen-and-paper exam till 2008, when approximately 2.9 lakh people registered, the previous maximum number of registrations. “The first computer-based test was held in 2009,” claimed Prof. Singh. Following that, the numbers progressively fell and rose.
