Raksha Mantri inaugurates first Military Heritage Festival

On October 21, 2023, Raksha Mantri Shri Rajnath Singh inaugurated the first edition of the Indian Military Heritage Festival in New Delhi. The two-day event celebrates India’s rich military culture and heritage through discussions, art, dance, drama, story-telling, and exhibitions. Panel discussions will bring together different perspectives from scholars, practitioners, and serving and retired officers.

The Raksha Mantri also launched ‘Project Udbhav’, a joint collaboration between the Indian Army and United Service Institution of India, promoting indigenous discourse and integrating ancient strategic acumen into contemporary military domains.

The event featured dignitaries such as Chief of the Army Staff General Manoj Pande, Chief of the Air Staff Air Chief Marshal VR Chaudhari, Chief of Integrated Defence Staff to the Chairman, Chiefs of Staff Committee (CISC) Lt Gen JP Mathew, and Vice Chief of the Naval Staff Vice Admiral Sanjay Jasjit Singh.

Military Heritage Festival

The Indian military has a rich history and strategic culture, but many are unaware of its various aspects. The festival aims to create a benchmark for public engagement with military history and heritage, while adhering to the goals of developing the Armed Forces in the 21st century.

It adds value to the ‘Aatmanirbhar Bharat’ and ‘Make in India’ initiatives, and provides a platform for discussing contemporary issues related to security, strategy, and international relations.

The festival will showcase military culture through military band performances, a Cultural Gala Evening, and an exhibition celebrating milestones in the nation’s military history, in collaboration with the Indian Institute of Heritage and Ministry of Culture.

Project Udbhav

The Indian Army is embracing a new approach to military development, recognizing the rich cultural-strategic legacy of the nation. The project, ‘Project Udbhav’, aims to develop indigenously-resonant military concepts, blending existing strategies with the diverse tactical wisdom encapsulated in historical documents.

The initiative is designed to create a strategic vocabulary and conceptual framework deeply embedded in India’s philosophical and cultural heritage. This will create a robust, progressive, and future-ready Indian Army that resonates with the nation’s historical military sagacity while also adapting to contemporary warfare and diplomacy dynamics.

The project involves in-depth research, discussions, studies, and engagements to disseminate the rich, varied, and often under-explored treasures of India’s strategic thought and military history.
