It’s not every day that a controversial figure like Raj Kundra, well-known as actor Shilpa Shetty’s husband, becomes the subject of a biographical film. “UT 69” attempts to delve into Kundra’s life during his 63-day stint in Arthur Road Jail following his alleged involvement in a pornography scandal in 2021. However, this jail drama directed by debutant Shahnawaz Ali fails to deliver a compelling narrative.
From start to finish, “UT 69” fixates on the prison, showcasing the grim conditions of inmates and the hardships they endure. While this premise could have potential, focusing solely on one person’s incarceration feels limited.
For those curious about how celebrities fare behind bars, Kundra’s time in prison might pique interest. The film highlights his experience of sleeping on the floor alongside 245 other inmates in a space designed for just 46 people, enduring unappetizing and hard-to-digest meals. Unfortunately, the film goes overboard with graphic toilet scenes, resorting to toilet humor with excessive pooping and farting noises, which seems unnecessary.
Nonetheless, “UT 69” does make a sincere attempt to shed light on the conditions in Indian jails, emphasizing the lack of basic amenities for inmates. Kundra’s portrayal of pain, angst, and helplessness is convincing, as are his interactions with fellow inmates and his emotional conversations with his wife, Shilpa Shetty, during their weekly calls. The scene depicting Ganesh Chaturthi celebrations among inmates is poignant and heartwarming.
Kundra’s acting is balanced, and the supporting cast, including the other inmates and the police personnel, deliver commendable performances, making the film watchable. However, the film’s attempt to inject humor into a serious subject may undermine the reality of prison life.
Towards the end, “UT 69” attempts to convey its message by highlighting Kundra’s efforts to address the conditions inside the jail after his release. He reported the situation to the Human Rights Commission and established a free legal aid team to assist underprivileged families with members in jail.
