After India lost the ODI World Cup final last November, Rahul Dravid wasn’t planning to continue as head coach. His contract had ended, and he felt it was time to step away. However, everything changed when Rohit Sharma called him and convinced him to stay.

Recently, Suryakumar Yadav shared that Dravid thanked Rohit for that pivotal phone call in November. Dravid, along with his coaching staff, agreed to stay on until this year’s T20 World Cup. Their goal was to win an ICC title, and they achieved that goal in spectacular fashion.

In a video posted by BCCI, Dravid expressed his gratitude to Rohit, saying, “Thank you very much, Ro, for making that call in November and asking me to continue. It’s been such a privilege and a pleasure to work with each and every one of you.” He acknowledged the ups and downs of their roles as captain and coach but highlighted their successful partnership.

The combination of Rohit and Dravid proved crucial as India became world champions after 13 years. Over the last two World Cups, India won 18 out of 20 matches across formats. Rohit even remarked that Dravid deserved the T20 World Cup trophy more than anyone else, given his immense contributions to Indian cricket over the years.

Following their T20 World Cup victory against South Africa, Rohit and Virat Kohli celebrated by lifting Dravid in the air during the joyous celebrations at Kensington Oval in Barbados.

Dravid’s tenure as head coach has now concluded, with BCCI set to announce his replacement soon. Gautam Gambhir is expected to succeed him, with the Cricket Advisory Committee shortlisting him along with former India women’s coach W V Raman for the position.

BCCI Secretary Jay Shah confirmed that both the head coach and selector appointments will be finalized shortly, with VVS Laxman temporarily taking charge during the Zimbabwe tour before the new coach joins for the Sri Lanka series.
