Queen Rania of Jordan has called attention to what she perceives as a “glaring double standard” and “deafening silence” in the global response to Israel’s ongoing war on the Gaza Strip. In an interview with CNN‘s Christiane Amanpour, she emphasized that the conflict did not begin on October 7th and has been ongoing for 75 years, resulting in significant death and displacement among Palestinians. She also highlighted the absence of context regarding a nuclear-armed regional superpower occupying and oppressing the Palestinian people.
The Queen expressed her solidarity with the people of Jordan, who are experiencing grief, pain, and shock in response to the high number of civilian casualties during the 18 days of war. She described the heartbreaking situation where Palestinian mothers have had to write their children’s names on their hands due to the constant risk of shelling and death.
Queen Rania stressed the importance of applying rules of engagement to all sides in the conflict and argued that Israel’s actions cannot be justified as self-defense, given the high civilian death toll and the precision targeting of civilian infrastructure.
She also pointed out that many in the region perceive the Western world as complicit in the conflict due to its support for Israel, and she expressed concern that the world is not calling for a ceasefire despite the significant human suffering.
This statement from Queen Rania reflects her perspective on the situation in Gaza and her concerns about the global response to the conflict.
