Prof. Karandikar takes charge as Secretary DST

Dr. Rajesh Gokhale was replaced as Secretary of the Department of Science and Technology (DST) by Professor Abhay Karandikar, a former Director of IIT Kanpur.

Electrical engineer Professor Karandikar is well known for his contributions to the nation’s telecommunications industry. In order to enable inexpensive rural broadband connectivity, he created the idea of a “Frugal 5G Network” and made contributions to telecom legislation and policy that were included into national telecom policies.

The Telecom Standards Development Society of India (TSDSI), India’s standards body for telecom, was established under his leadership after he led a group that contributed to various international standardization activities on telecommunications.

Professor Karandikar, an IIT Kanpur alumni, began his career at IIT Bombay, where he later rose to the position of Dean (Faculty Affairs), head of the Electrical Engineering Department, first Professor-in-Charge of the IIT Bombay Research Park, and director of the IIT Bombay Computer Centre. His selection as Director of IIT Kanpur, his own alma mater, came after this.

In order to integrate several Radio Access Technologies (RATS) into a single control and management framework as part of the 5G networks, he and his team developed an innovative SDN-based architecture. They put forth various cutting-edge SDN, RAN virtualization, and Frugal 5G frameworks. Additionally, Professor Karandikar oversaw the filing of various patents for innovations that he and his team had created.
