The first week of September will see Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s travel to Singapore, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said on Friday. The visit will be essential to deepening the two countries’ bilateral ties.
“On September 4 and 5, 2024, PM Modi will visit Singapore at the invitation of PM, his excellency Lawrence Wong,” a spokesman for the Ministry of External Affairs, Randhir Jaiswal, stated.
The leaders will discuss topics of common interest in the region and throughout the world while also reviewing the development of the India-Singapore Strategic Partnership. The Prime Minister will meet with Singaporean officials and pay a visit to H.E. Mr. Tharman Shanmugaratnam, the President of Singapore. The Singaporean business executives and the prime minister will also meet, according to a statement from the Ministry of External Affairs.
PM Modi is set to visit Singapore after a high-level meeting between senior ministers of India and Singapore. The Indian delegation, including Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar, Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal, and Railways and Information Technology Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, attended the second India-Singapore Ministerial Roundtable (ISMR) in Singapore.
The meeting focused on strengthening bilateral cooperation in areas such as digital technology, skill development, sustainability, healthcare, connectivity, and manufacturing. Singapore PM Lawrence Wong expressed satisfaction with progress made since the last meeting and urged for new ideas for cooperation, including advanced manufacturing and connectivity.
In 2023-24, bilateral trade between India and Singapore reached $35.61 billion, making Singapore India’s sixth largest global trade partner. PM Modi’s visit to Brunei will be the first-ever bilateral visit by an Indian PM to Brunei and coincide with the 40th anniversary of diplomatic ties. The Ministry of External Affairs aims to strengthen India’s cooperation with Brunei and Singapore both bilaterally and within regional and multilateral frameworks.
