PM Modi to Participate in ASEAN and East Asia Summit in Indonesia on Sept 6-7

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will visit Indonesia on September 6-7 to attend the Asean-India and East Asia Summits, with the goal of strengthening India’s trade and security ties with the Association of Southeast Asian Nations.

According to a statement from the external affairs ministry, Modi is visiting Jakarta for the discussions at the invitation of Indonesian President Joko Widodo.

The two critical meetings will take place days before India hosts the G20 Summit in New Delhi on September 9–10; Indonesia is now serving as Asean’s chair.

It will be the first Asean-India summit after the two regions’ relations were upgraded to a comprehensive strategic partnership in 2022. According to the announcement, the summit will evaluate the development of relations between India and the Asean and set a course for future cooperation.

The East Asia Summit will provide leaders of Asean nations and the eight dialogue partners of the alliance, including India, with a forum for discussion on global and regional concerns.

India’s policy towards the Indo-Pacific places Asean in the spotlight. India has strong business links with several important Asean nations, particularly Singapore.

In the past, there was rumours that Modi may meet with China’s top officials outside of the Asean-related gatherings. Premier Li Qiang will serve as the head of the Chinese delegation, as President Xi Jinping will not be present at the discussions in Jakarta. Li will likely serve as the leader of the Chinese delegation at the upcoming G20 summit in New Delhi.
