PM Modi Hands Over G20 Presidency to Brazil, Emphasizes ‘One Earth, One Family’ Vision

In a ceremonial transfer of the G20 presidency, Prime Minister Narendra Modi passed the gavel to Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva. This transition highlighted India’s commitment to raising issues important to emerging economies. Here are the key highlights of this significant event:

1. “One Earth, One Family” Vision: During his closing remarks, PM Modi emphasized that the G20 had become a platform for optimistic efforts regarding the vision of “One Earth, One Family, One Future.” This vision reflects a collective commitment to addressing global challenges.
2. Lula da Silva’s Priorities: President Lula da Silva praised PM Modi and outlined key G20 priorities, including social inclusion, fighting hunger, energy transition, and sustainable development. He also stressed the need for greater representation of emerging countries in international organizations like the UN Security Council, World Bank, and IMF.
3. Global Trust Deficit: The Summit called for an end to the “global trust deficit,” signaling a commitment to building trust and cooperation among member nations.
4. Global Biofuel Alliance: The G20 launched the Global Biofuel Alliance, underscoring the importance of sustainable energy sources for a greener future.
5. Connectivity Networks: New connectivity networks between the US, India, Saudi Arabia, and Gulf states were initiated, strengthening ties and cooperation in the region.
6. Delhi Declaration: The G20 members unanimously adopted the Delhi Declaration, which emphasized the principles of international law, including territorial integrity, sovereignty, and international humanitarian law, to maintain global peace and stability.

8. Renewable Energy and Fossil Fuels: The G20 committed to tripling global renewable energy capacity by 2030 and pledged to phase down coal power, considering national circumstances. While not committing to a complete phase-out of all polluting fossil fuels, the bloc reiterated its 2009 promise to eliminate inefficient fossil fuel subsidies.
9. African Union’s Inclusion: The African Union was inducted as a new permanent member of the G20, enhancing the influence of developing nations in global decision-making.
10. Homage to Mahatma Gandhi: Ahead of the sessions, delegates paid homage to Mahatma Gandhi at his memorial, Rajghat, in Delhi, underscoring the significance of India’s rich history and its role in the G20.
