In his Independence Day address to the country, Prime Minister Narendra Modi applauded the judiciary’s efforts to translate major judgements into regional languages. “I’d like to thank the Supreme Court for making the operative part of its decisions available in one’s mother tongue.” Regional languages are becoming more important, according to the Prime Minister.
Among the visitors at the occasion was Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud, who acknowledged the Prime Minister with folded hands.
As part of this year’s Republic Day and foundation day celebrations, the Supreme Court uploaded over 1,000 of its decisions in regional languages.
According to CJI Chandrachud, 9,423 judgements have been translated into regional languages since then, with 8,977 of them being in Hindi.
“Our goal is to make 35,000 key decisions accessible to people in all languages since the Supreme Court’s inception,” he added.
The verdicts are now available on the Supreme Court website in Oriya, Gujarati, Tamil, Assamese, Khasi, Garo, Punjabi, Nepali, and Bengali, in addition to Hindi, and more languages will be added soon.
The initiative aims to bring the judiciary to people’s homes and assist them comprehend the legal process by reading judgements in their native language.
PM Modi’s allusion to the Supreme Court came as he emphasized his government’s emphasis on regional language instruction.
His speech also contained a report card on his government’s accomplishments over the last decade. He also spoke at length on the program that his administration intends to implement.
