In a recent update, the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) has officially announced that the upcoming general elections in Pakistan will be held on February 11, 2023. This revised date follows earlier expectations that the elections might occur in the last week of January, without specifying a precise date. The delay in election scheduling was primarily due to the necessity of a delimitation exercise, driven by the recent national census conducted earlier this year.
The ECP’s decision was shared with the Pakistan Supreme Court during the hearing of petitions, as reported by Geo TV. The ECP’s lawyer informed the three-member bench that the elections would take place once the delimitation process is completed by November 30.
It is important to note that the Constitution of Pakistan requires the holding of elections within 90 days after the dissolution of the National Assembly. This constitutional deadline was set to expire on November 7. Despite this deadline, the ECP chose to prioritize the delimitation exercise, taking into account the comprehensive census conducted nationwide in March and April of this year, which was approved by the Council of Common Interest (CCI).
The political landscape in Pakistan has been marked by uncertainty since the removal of the Imran Khan government through a no-confidence motion in the National Assembly in April 2022. This period of political upheaval coincides with a significant economic crisis in the country.
As Pakistan looks forward to its general elections on February 11, 2023, the nation anticipates a crucial turning point in its political trajectory. The ECP’s commitment to a thorough delimitation process underscores the importance of accurate representation and fairness in the electoral system.
