According to data from the Ministry of Education’s Department of School Education and Literacy (DoSEL), over 29 lakh students failed the Class 10 exams last year.
Data released by the government indicates that 1,89,90,809 students took the Class 10 exam; of those, 1,60,34,671 were found to have passed and 29,56,138 did not advance to the Class 11 level. India’s Minister of Education, Dharmendra Pradhan, disclosed the information in the Lok Sabha.
In the last four years, there has been a rise in the number of students who have failed the Class 10 exam. In 2019, there were 109800, in 2020 there were 100812, in 2021 there were 31196, and in 2022 there was a sharp increase to 117308 students.
Numerous other boards have also reported a significant number of students who were unable to pass Class 10 in the previous year, including the National Institute of Open Schooling (NIOS), Assam Board of Secondary Education, Bihar School Examination Board (BSEB), Chhattisgarh Board of Secondary Education, Gujarat Secondary & Higher Secondary Education Board, Board of School Education Haryana (HSEB), Maharashtra State Board of Secondary & Higher Secondary Education, Board of Secondary Education Madhya Pradesh, Madhyamik Shiksha Parishad Uttar Pradesh, and others.
The reasons why students fail exams vary and include not attending classes, finding it difficult to follow instructions, losing interest in their studies, the difficulty of the exam, having poor teachers, and receiving little support from parents, teachers, and schools etc.,” Pradhan said.
With the exception of a few states like Odisha and Bihar, where the dropout rate jumped from 39.4 to 49.9 in Odisha and from 41.6 to 42.1 in Bihar in the 2021–22 academic year, most states and UTs saw a fall in dropout rates. The dropout rate rose from 5.3 to 12.4 in Goa between 2021 and 2022. The percentage of dropouts rose from 18.7 to 20.4 in Maharashtra as well.
