Between 2019 and 2021, over 13.13 lakh girls and women went missing in the country, with Madhya Pradesh reporting about two lakh incidents, closely followed by West Bengal.
The data, provided last week in the Rajya Sabha by the Union Ministry of Home Ministry (MHA), revealed that 10,61,648 women over the age of 18 and 2,51,430 girls under the age of 18 went missing across the country between 2019 and 2021.
The National Crime Records Bureau produced the information. According to the report, 1,60,180 women and 38,234 girls went missing in Madhya Pradesh between 2019 and 2021.
Between 2019 and 2021, 61,054 women and 22,919 girls were reported missing, with Delhi recording the greatest number of such cases among the UTs. During the period, 8,617 women and 1,148 girls went missing in Jammu & Kashmir. The administration also informed the Rajya Sabha that it has implemented a number of efforts to ensure women’s safety across the country.
During the same time period, 1,56,905 women and 36,606 girls went missing in West Bengal. During the period, 1,78,400 women and 13,033 girls went missing in Maharashtra. In Odisha, 70,222 women and 16,649 girls went missing over a three-year period, while 49,116 women and 10,817 girls went missing in Chhattisgarh.
There are an estimated 142.6 million “missing women” in the world. Most of them are concentrated in Asia, especially in India and China. Sex-selective abortion, infanticide, early marriage, and human trafficking are among the causes of this concerning trend. Gender prejudice is perpetuated by several practices, which impede gender equality and development.
