On Wednesday, the school education department inaugurated the Automated Permanent Academic Account Registry (APAAR) in rural areas around the country using Common Service Centres (CSCs).

The purpose of APAAR is to establish a uniform student identification system known as ‘One Nation, One Student ID’.

APAAR is part of the National Education Policy (NEP 2020), which requires all college and university students to register with the Academic Bank of Credits (ABC). Under the new rules, having an ABC ID is required for college or university admission.

Sanjay Kumar, secretary of the Department of School Education and Literacy, launched the scheme by highlighting the country’s developing digital services and how they might help school education through CSCs. He emphasized giving interim APAAR IDs to all schoolchildren immediately, verifying them with Aadhaar, and linking them to Digi Locker.

In an effort to increase openness and accessibility to education, a business plan for this service targeted at village-level entrepreneurs (VLEs) is also being considered.

K Sanjay Murthy, Secretary of Higher Education at the Ministry of Education, emphasized the government’s use of digital platforms such as Samarth, Swayam, and Diksha for student benefit, with the goal of covering at least 10,000 institutions through Samarth within the next 1.5 years.

Mr Murthy emphasized the importance of CSCs in APAAR and Samarth, and compared the Academic Bank of Credits to the National Academic Depository (NAD).

Anil Sahasrabudhe, Chairman of the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE), said that APAAR ID remains with students for life, enabling future credit accumulation by passing exams without needing certificates.

What is the Academic Bank of Credit?

ABC is a digital repository or digital storage. Students can easily avail its benefits. For this service, the student does not need to go anywhere else but to the nearest CSC. In this digital credit bank, all the credits, i.e., marks scored by the students and all their personal information will be available.

With the help of this ID, it will be easy for all the students to take admission from one institute to another for graduation and post-graduation. Universities will now be able to access all the data of students with one click with the help of ABC ID.

It is a storehouse of credits earned by an individual student throughout his or her learning. This storehouse is virtual or digital. It contains complete information about all the studies done by the student in any institution, his/her performance and mainly the credits obtained by the student. They can use them at many places and in many ways throughout their studies. The suggestion to bring the Academic Bank of Credit in education was given in the NEP 2020.
