One nation, One ID for all the students across India: Govt

In accordance with the new “One Nation, One Student” initiative introduced by the Union government, the state administration has instructed all schools to obtain parental approval before creating a new identity card for students called the Automated Permanent Academic Account Registry (APAAR).

This ID, which will be unique to each student, will track each student’s educational progress, achievements, and other details.

The Union Ministry of Education wrote a letter dated October 11 and addressed to all chief secretaries regarding the development of APAAR ID for students, which was also mentioned in a letter the school education department sent to the Commissioner of Education.

According to the ministry’s letter, “Ministry of Education will generate APAAR ID based on Aadhaar number of each student for which separate consent of the parents is required.” Additionally, the state has requested that teachers update the UDISE data for students blood type, height, and weight.

This growing number of non-academic responsibilities has caused teachers to become dissatisfied. From October 16 to October 18, special parent-teacher meetings are to be held in schools to educate parents about APAAR ID and to explain its applications before obtaining their assent.

Pandurang Kengar from school principals’ association in Mumbai, said, “Schools just completed work of students’ AADHAAR Card update on UDISE. Now, a new ID card is in the making. We also have to update each student’s height, weight and blood-group on UDISE. This leaves us no time to focus on academics.” Mahendra Ganpule, spokesperson for the state principals’ association said, “The list of non-academic tasks given to teachers keeps increasing while number of teachers remains inadequate.”
