During the current winter session, the central government is considering introducing the “One nation, one election” measure. According to insiders, the intention to introduce the law is evident, even if the Union cabinet has not yet approved it.
The “One Nation One Poll” (ONOP) law will be introduced in the upcoming budget session of Parliament, if not during the winter session, according to people with knowledge of the situation. According to sources, it will probably be sent to a joint parliamentary committee (JPC) for broader consultation when it is submitted, following the precedent set by the Waqf Amendment Bill.
According to sources, the JPC would be required to have meetings with speakers of state assemblies and individuals from various backgrounds in addition to state governments and political parties.
According to the Kovind committee, which suggested that three pieces of legislation be included in the bill, they stated the Center has not yet decided whether the measure would be complete or include other proposals, including ones that would modify the constitution.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi strongly supports this change. This allows the incumbent regime to focus on governance during its duration rather than elections.
In fact, the BJP’s top leaders, including Home Minister Amit Shah, have stated on several occasions that ‘One nation, one election’ will become a reality before the 2029 elections. Even NDA partners, including as Telugu Desam Party leader Chandrababu Naidu, are enthusiastic supporters of ONOP.
