New Zealand defeated Pakistan by 54 runs in their final group stage match on Monday (14 October) to advance to the semi-finals, while India were eliminated from the Women’s T20 World Cup. The New Zealand bowlers worked together to dismiss Pakistan for 56 while defending a reasonable 111-run target. Amelia Kerr was the top bowler for New Zealand, taking three wickets.
Pakistan gave themselves a chance to make a stunning semi-final appearance by holding New Zealand to a below-par score of 110/6. Following the bowler’s outstanding performance, the Pakistan hitters had a chance to advance their team to the final four, but the equation was complex. India was also counting on neighbours Pakistan to pull off an upset.
To advance to the semi-finals, Fatima Sana and her team had to chase down the target in 10.4 overs, but India’s qualification was dependent on New Zealand’s defeat. However, New Zealand bowlers outperformed Pakistan batsmen and bowled them out at just 56.
It was an embarrassing departure for India from the T20 World Cup, despite being one of the favourites prior to the tournament’s commencement. They struggled to hold their composure against New Zealand and Australia while chasing and finished the season with two wins in four games.
India began their campaign with a poor performance against New Zealand, losing by 52 runs and finding themselves in a difficult scenario to qualify for semifinals after their first game only. However, they bounced back in their second and third league matches against Pakistan and Sri Lanka respectively and won with a good margin which helped them convert their net run rate from negative to positive. But, they succumbed under pressure against Australia in their final league stage match, suffering a painful defeat.
