New Rules Set for DGP Appointment and Tenure

According to revised guidelines for DGP appointments that were approved by the state cabinet on Monday, the DGP’s term in Uttar Pradesh will be at least two years, and only an officer with at least six months remaining in their career would be assigned to this position.

The officer will be chosen by a committee led by a retired high court judge. The panel will also include a retired DGP, the state chief secretary, a nominee from the Union Public Service Commission, and another chief secretary (home).

If the appointed DGP is found to be involved in any criminal case/corruption or is incapable of performing his/her duties, the government can remove the officer even before the completion of two years’ tenure. To remove the DGP, it will be necessary to follow the instructions of the high court. According to the rules, only those officers will be selected for the post who are working on the post of DG in level 16 of the pay matrix.
