New Museum Near Humayun’s Tomb in Delhi Opens to Visitors Soon

A fascinating new museum near Humayun’s Tomb in Delhi will be open to visitors beginning August 1. On July 29, Culture Minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat launched the underground museum, which preserves vistas of surrounding landmarks such as Sabz Burj, Sunder Burj, and Isa Khan Niyazi’s garden mausoleum.

The museum spans 100,000 square feet and houses approximately 700 objects as well as five major halls that chronicle the tale of Mughal emperor Humayun’s life and travels. This museum, designed and created by the Aga Khan Trust for Culture (AKTC) in collaboration with the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI), is the product of 25 years of conservation effort in Humayun’s Tomb, Sunder Nursery, and Nizamuddin Basti, which spans 300 acres.

According to Ratish Nanda, CEO of AKTC, the museum’s mission is to tell the rich history of Humayun and the Nizamuddin neighborhood through a tiered exhibition of genuine and copied items, documents, movies, and animations. Highlights include an astrolabe used by Humayun, water containers from his time, and a 40-foot-wide 3D representation of Delhi’s 2,500-year history.

The museum offers three separate entry tickets priced at ₹50 each for Sunder Nursery, Humayun’s Tomb, and the museum itself. A combination ticket for all three sites costs ₹110.

One unusual exhibit is a rare coin from Akbar’s reign that reads ‘Allahu Akbar’ on one side and ‘Ram’ on the other. The museum also displays the genuine golden finial that formerly adorned Humayun’s Tomb, as well as a magnificently carved chattri (rooftop canopy), which exemplifies the grandeur of Mughal architecture.

Nanda provided amazing information about Humayun: he traveled over 34,000 kilometers in his lifetime, exploring 122 places and engaging in 27 battles, considerably exceeding the legendary traveler Marco Polo.

The museum is poised to take tourists on a deep dive into Humayun’s life and the Nizamuddin area’s rich cultural legacy, guaranteeing an informative experience.
