New MS and PhD Programs Introduced at IIT Mandi

The Indian Institute of Technology Mandi’s Centre for Indian Knowledge System and Mental Health Application (IKSHMA) has introduced the first-ever MS (by research) and PhD degrees in Music and Musopathy with the goal of advancing interdisciplinary learning and making a significant contribution to the area of Indian music.

According to the institute, leveraging the synergies between music, health, and technology can facilitate remarkable advances in both individual and collective well-being.

The programme is open to both full-time and part-time candidates and can be pursued live, online, or in a hybrid format by all qualifying candidates, regardless of geographical location. Online applications for this course are open until July 15, 2024.

Prof Laxmidhar Behera, director, IIT Mandi, said, “The institute is committed to developing science and technology relevant to the Indian knowledge system. The MS and PhD programmes in Music and Musopathy represent another significant step in this endeavour. This programme will not only explore the science of Indian music, but also its therapeutic value for the holistic well-being of mind, body, and consciousness.”

The MS and PhD programmes in Music and Musopathy are research-based, aimed at producing highly skilled professionals and researchers who can contribute meaningfully to the development and understanding of music and its beneficial impacts on individuals and society, including the wellness-centric field of Musopathy.

These programmes offer a comprehensive education in Music and Musopathy, covering foundational, intermediate, and advanced aspects, all enriched by the expertise of the IKSMHA Centre.

The institute will host an array of celebrity advisors including Padma Vibhushan awardee Sonal Mansingh, percussion maestro Prof Trichy Sankaran, Professor Emeritus, York University, Canada, and the preeminent scientist Gautam Desiraju, Prof Emeritus, IISc Bangalore and Chitravina N Ravikiran who has helped design parts of the programme in collaboration with the premier music education portal, www.acharyanet.com.

Sowmya Acharya, founder and CEO of Acharyanet.com, expressed her enthusiasm about collaboration with IIT Mandi, stating, “It is an honour to collaborate with a premier institution like IIT Mandi in this unique programme that bridges the worlds of arts and science, wellness and health.”

Eligibility

The admission process will be akin to MS and PhD admissions ordinances. Traditional degrees from recognised universities (e.g., Acharya) are considered equivalent to bachelor’s and master’s degrees in engineering, sciences, arts, and social sciences. Degrees from accredited music institutions such as Kalakshetra, Chennai, Gandharva Maha Vidyalaya, Delhi, Chennai Govt Music College etc. after 3 years of music education.

Job prospects

Graduates of this programme will find substantial opportunities not only in the classical, popular, and film music industries, including as specialists in music recording and production, but also in research institutions, academia, and the healthcare and wellness sectors. The seamless integration of technology, music, and therapy equips graduates with comprehensive skills needed for innovative problem-solving and leadership roles across various disciplines.
