Former Pakistani Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, disqualified in the Panama Papers case in July 2017, has officially become the consensus candidate for his party in the upcoming parliamentary elections. Sharif, who returned to Pakistan in October after four years in self-imposed exile, had his convictions overturned, allowing his participation in the elections scheduled for February 8.
Rana Sanaullah Khan, a senior leader in Sharif’s party, confirmed his candidacy, stating, “There is no doubt about it. Nawaz Sharif is our candidate for the office of the prime minister.”
The returning officer of National Assembly (NA)-130 Lahore accepted Sharif’s nomination papers without objections, paving the way for his candidacy in the general elections. However, acceptance for another constituency, NA-15 Mansehra, is pending as of now.
Facing competition in NA-130 from PTI stalwart Dr. Yasmin Rashid and 22 other candidates, Sharif’s return to politics marks a significant development. Having voluntarily stepped down in 2017 amid corruption allegations, Sharif’s subsequent prison sentences were overturned, allowing him to seek a historic fourth term as prime minister.
