Navy Day 2024: Why It’s Celebrated and Its Significance in History

Every year, December 4th serves as a reminder of the Indian Navy’s tremendous gallantry at one of the most critical periods in Indian history. The day honors the success of action Trident, a naval action during the 1971 Indo-Pakistani War that demonstrated the Indian Navy’s might and precision.

The roots of Navy Day lie in the Indo-Pak War of 1971 when Pakistan launched a surprise attack on Indian air bases on December 3. The following night, December 4, the Indian Navy orchestrated Operation Trident against Pakistan’s Karachi Naval Headquarters.

Three Pakistani navy vessels, including the PNS Khaibar, were sunk by the Navy, which caused extensive damage with three missile boats—INS Veer, INS Nipat, and INS Nirghat—and Vidyut-class vessels.

Commodore Kasargod Pattana Shetty Gopal Rao’s leadership demonstrated the power of the Indian navy while hundreds of enemy soldiers were lost.

Navy Day is observed on December 4 to commemorate this triumph and the lives lost during the expedition. It honors the Navy’s crucial role in protecting India’s waterways and provides a chance to spread knowledge of its accomplishments.

Significance

Beyond commemorating Operation Trident, Navy Day emphasizes the importance of maritime security for a nation like India, surrounded by vast coastlines.

The Indian Navy not only defends our borders but also ensures safe international trade routes, protects regional stability in the Indian Ocean and fosters global cooperation.

Observing Navy Day reminds us of the hardships faced by Navy personnel and their families.
