National Conference, Congress Seal Seat-Sharing Deal – Who Gets What?

The National Conference will contest the upcoming Jammu and Kashmir Assembly elections on as many as 51 out of the 90 seats, while the Congress will field its candidates in 31 constituencies, senior leaders of both parties said in a joint press conference on Monday evening.

While announcing the seat-sharing agreement, J&K Congress chief Tariq Hameed Karra said that the alliance will also have a “friendly but disciplined contest” on 5 seats in the Union Territory.

“The National Conference will contest on 51 seats, Congress on 32, and we have agreed to have a friendly but disciplined contest on 5 seats,” Karra said.

The alliance has also deputed 1 seat each for the Communist Party of India (Marxist) and the Panthers Party.

Assembly elections in Jammu and Kashmir are scheduled to take place in three phases on September 18, 25 and October 1 after almost a decade, and counting of votes will be taken up on October 4.

After the seat-sharing announcement, former Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Farooq Abdullah said that the National Conference and the Congress will fight together against those forces who are “trying to divide people”.

“It is a matter of great happiness that we started this campaign that both of us will fight together against those forces who are trying to divide people in Jammu and Kashmir. The INDIA alliance was formed so that we can fight those forces who want to communalize, divide and break the country,” Abdullah said.

Hitting back at the BJP and expressing confidence in the INDIA bloc’s victory in the Jammu and Kashmir elections, KC Venugopal stated that the Congress and the National Conference are forming a government in the union territory.

The BJP seeks to destroy the soul of Jammu and Kashmir. Congress and the National Conference are forming a government in Jammu and Kashmir that is people-friendly. We held a conversation and agreed on a formula. “We will fight together and win,” the senior Congress leader stated.
