By presenting this year’s budget, Ms. Sitharaman would surpass Morarji Desai’s record of six budget presentations and become the first Finance Minister to do so seven times in a row.

During his tenure as the nation’s Finance Minister (1959–1964), Mr. Desai unveiled a record six budgets, five of which were complete and one of which was an interim plan.

Similar to the last few complete Union budgets, Budget 2024 will be distributed electronically. The nation was about to hold general elections, thus on February 1st, an interim union budget for 2024 was announced.

The Finance Ministry has concluded multiple rounds of discussions with various economic stakeholders as part of the budget preparation process.

Ms. Sitharaman met with representatives from trade unions, the education and health sectors, employment and skilling, MSMEs, trade and services, industry, economists, the financial sector, capital markets, infrastructure, energy, and urban sectors during the first day of these meetings on June 20.

Economists talked about a number of important topics at the conference, including increasing capital spending and lowering the fiscal deficit.

The team of economists recommended to the ministry that, in addition to creating jobs, the primary priorities for the next budget should be cutting the fiscal deficit.
