In a bid to attract investments from US tech giants for Tamil Nadu, Chief Minister MK Stalin visited the offices of Apple, Google and Microsoft, discussing ‘various opportunities and exciting partnerships’ with them.
The Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) chief took to X (formerly Twitter) and shared pictures from his US visit, and wrote “Discussed various opportunities and exciting partnerships. Stalin, who described his US visit as “awe-inspiring”, inked a pact under the ‘Naan Mudhalvan’ scheme in partnership with Google to skill two million youngsters in Tamil Nadu in AI.
According to the MoU, Google will collaborate with Guidance, the Tamil Nadu government’s lead agency for investment promotion and facilitation, to help the establishment of a viable AI ecosystem. This includes giving access to innovative technology and resources, with a focus on empowering individuals, businesses, and government bodies to use AI to drive inclusive growth and advancement, according to an official statement.
“We are happy to collaborate with Google on advanced manufacturing, including the recently announced Made in India Pixel 8 phone being manufactured in Tamil Nadu. The MoU signed today will explore key AI initiatives under the Tamil Nadu AI Labs. Our partnership with Google is a significant step forward towards establishing Tamil Nadu as a thriving AI and advanced electronics manufacturing hub”, Minister of Industries Dr TRB Rajaa said.
“We’re thrilled to partner with the Tamil Nadu Government on their journey towards an AI-powered future. This collaboration underscores our shared commitment to fostering inclusive growth and technological progress through AI”, Amit Zavery, Head of Platform of Google Cloud, said.
Google will work alongside Tamil Nadu’s startup ecosystem to offer mentorship and networking with Google experts and industry leaders, with AI-focused events designed to solve local challenges and foster innovation and problem-solving within the community. The Google for Startup program will provide eligible VC-funded AI startups with Cloud credits, technical training, and business support to accelerate their growth.
Tamil Nadu’s government has signed a MoU with Google and Google Cloud’s partners to help leverage Google Cloud’s AI on open networks marketplace. The collaboration aims to streamline access, automate processes, enhance decision-making, and promote innovation through technology adoption. The signing of the MoU came after a discussion initiated by the DMK chief with Google representatives on August 30. Stalin also highlighted the importance of boosting growth through AI innovations in start-ups and industrial ecosystem mobility.
Stalin also visited the office of Apple Inc., a tech giant known for its world-class electronic products. He expressed gratitude to Apple for ensuring Tamil Nadu finds a presence in the global electronics manufacturing ecosystem. He invited Apple to invest in Tamil Nadu, stating that the state would be further strengthened and transformed into the manufacturing hub of Asia.
The discussions between Stalin’s delegation and the iPhone makers also focused on efforts in women empowerment and improvements in industrial housing and logistics in Tamil Nadu. The delegation met with LinkedIn CEO Ryan Roslansky and the senior leadership team during their visit to the Microsoft office. Key opportunities discussed included the expansion of data center infrastructure in Tamil Nadu and the establishment of a Global Capability Centre. Collaborative efforts on AI training initiatives were assessed to develop a future-ready workforce.
