On Saturday, streaming giant Netflix had a severe outage, affecting thousands of customers worldwide as they sought to watch Mike Tyson and Jake Paul’s highly awaited boxing battle.
Technical issues hampered the broadcast of the match, which drew a lot of attention owing to the unusual combination of YouTuber-turned-boxer Paul and boxing icon Tyson. Netflix’s entry into live sports programming met a stumbling block as fans failed to access the feed before to the event, which was advertised as the largest boxing event ever televised live.
Downdetector.com, a website tracking online service interruptions, reported over 85,000 users encountering issues. The outage primarily affected major metropolitan areas in the United States, including New York, Seattle, and Los Angeles, with scattered reports from elsewhere. The cause of the outage remains unknown.
Meanwhile, a sell-out crowd of 75,000 at AT&T Stadium in Dallas, Texas witnessed the fight live, unaffected by the streaming issues. Social media erupted with anger and frustration from fans unable to access the Netflix livestream.
“The second this fight started getting good Netflix f crashed again. I’m getting super annoyed,” one X user said.
“Spent all this money to stream ‘the greatest boxing match ever’ only to crash 3 fights before the main event,” another said during prelims.
One fan tweeted, “If Netflix doesn’t fix this buffering issue, this will go down as one of the biggest fails in all of tv/streaming history.”
Netflix is yet to comment on the matter.
