Meta’s Threads App Threatened With Legal Action By Twitter

Twitter is considering taking legal action against Meta due to its rival app, Threads. The app, which has gained over 30 million users since its launch, has drawn comparisons to Twitter. While Meta denies allegations of using ex-Twitter staff to develop Threads, Twitter’s Elon Musk has expressed concerns about unfair competition. Both platforms have acknowledged the rivalry, with Meta’s Mark Zuckerberg breaking his Twitter silence to post a meme indicating a stand-off between the two companies.

Twitter is contemplating legal action against Meta over its recently launched app, Threads. With over 30 million users in just a short time, Threads has been positioned as a friendly alternative to Twitter. However, Twitter has raised concerns about the alleged involvement of former Twitter employees in the development of Threads.

In a letter to Meta, Twitter’s attorney accused Meta of unlawfully misappropriating trade secrets and intellectual property. Twitter intends to protect its intellectual property rights and demands that Meta cease using any confidential information belonging to Twitter. Both companies are yet to comment on the matter.

The rivalry between Twitter and Threads has caught the attention of Elon Musk, who stated that competition is acceptable but cheating is not. The similarities between Threads and Twitter, including the look and feel of the app, have been noted. However, for Twitter to succeed in a legal battle, it would need to prove that its intellectual property, such as programming code, was unlawfully used. Additionally, US copyright law does not protect ideas. Meta has responded by stating that none of the Threads engineering team members are former Twitter employees.

Threads’ rapid user growth has been impressive, although it still falls significantly short of Twitter’s estimated 350 million users. The app’s ability to tap into Instagram’s existing user base of two billion monthly users has contributed to its success. Despite the legal dispute, both Meta and Twitter continue to engage in social media banter, acknowledging the rivalry between the two platforms.
