Opposition Demands PM Modi’s Statement on Manipur, Govt Calls for Home Minister’s Address

With the opposition calling for a statement from Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the government insisting that Home Minister Amit Shah speak on the Manipur problem, it seems likely that the Manipur issue will continue to be the focus of the Parliament’s monsoon session for a fourth day.

According to sources with an understanding of the situation, the government has already made an effort to talk through the problem. Shah earlier stated, “I urge all the respected members of the opposition that on a very delicate matter, many members have asked for a debate between the ruling party and the opposition, and I am ready for the discussion. I’m not sure why the opposition is opposed to the conversation.

And according to media sources, even Rajnath Singh, the defense minister, has spoken on the phone with prominent opposition figures.

But the opposition is emphatic that they will not accede to the government’s demands.

“There has been a horrendous loss of lives… there were rapes and violence and displacement,” senior Congressman Shashi Tharoor told NDTV. And right now, it’s growing. A reaction has occurred in Mizoram, and Meities are leaving the region. Additionally, he said that the PM should not be focused on any other topic at the moment.

As the BJP criticised the opposition for failing to address sexual violence in non-BJP states, Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge responded, as reported by ANI, “Are you comparing any one state to the (situation in Manipur)? Law and order don’t exist there. Has this been occurring elsewhere? Using someone else’s weakness as leverage to disguise one’s own is improper. There (in the affected states), you have the right to speak, and your supporters are present. We are exercising our right to ask questions in this Parliament.
