In a security incident near Buckingham Palace, London’s Metropolitan Police arrested a 25-year-old man for trespassing after he was found climbing into the Royal Mews. Fortunately, he did not gain access to Buckingham Palace or its gardens during the incident. This incident, while concerning, did not result in a breach of the main palace.
Incident Details
At 1:25 am (0025 GMT) on a Saturday morning, officers at Buckingham Palace responded to reports of an individual climbing over a wall and entering the Royal Mews, which houses carriages, stables, and modern vehicles used for road travel arrangements for King Charles III and other members of the royal family.
The man, aged 25, was promptly detained by law enforcement outside the stables in the Royal Mews. Authorities arrested him for “trespassing on a protected site,” and he was taken into custody at a London police station.
While this incident is notable, it is not the first security breach near royal premises. Buckingham Palace has experienced intrusions in the past. One of the most well-known breaches occurred in 1982 when Michael Fagan managed to enter Queen Elizabeth II’s bedroom. Fagan, an unemployed decorator who had consumed alcohol, climbed a drainpipe to access the late queen’s London residence. He spent around 10 minutes conversing with the queen before palace staff intervened.
