According to the National Testing Agency (NTA), Maharashtra received the most applications from state boards in the last five years for the medical exam National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET) UG. In terms of applicants, the Karnataka state board is in second place, followed by Tamil Nadu and Uttar Pradesh.
More than 20.38 lakh people applied to take the NEET exam this year. In 2019, it was 14.10 lakh. According to statistics reviewed by PTI, the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) produced the largest contingent of applicants for the country’s largest entrance exam between 2019 and 2023. The board that oversees the national Class 12 exams received more over 5.51 lakh applications this year.
But when it comes to applications for NEET-UG, the National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test (Under-Graduate), Maharashtra tops the list of state boards.
The Maharashtra state board received more than 2.57 lakh exam applications this year. According to NTA data, more than 2.31 lakh applicants applied for the NEET-UG last year.
In contrast to previous year, when 1.14 lakh candidates from the Karnataka state board applied, this year there were more than 1.22 lakh applicants.
With more over 1.13 lakh students applying for the medical test this year, the Tamil Nadu state board came in third. According to the data, more than 1.11 lakh applicants from the Uttar Pradesh state board submitted NEET-UG applications.
More than 1.07 lakh candidates came from the Kerala state board, and more than 71,000 from the Bihar state board.
The results showed that the lowest number of candidates came from the state boards of Tripura (1,683), Mizoram (1,844), and Meghalaya (2,300). Nagaland (2,422), Goa (3,834), and Uttarakhand (4,423) are other state boards with fewer than 5,000 NEET-UG applications.
The qualifying entrance test for admission to the Bachelor of Dental Surgery (BDS), Bachelor of Ayurveda, Medicine and Surgery (BAMS), and Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) programmes is the NEET-UG.
NEET-UG is also the prerequisite test for the Bachelor of Siddha Medicine and Surgery (BSMS), Bachelor of Unani Medicine and Surgery (BUMS), Bachelor of Homoeopathic Medicine and Surgery (BHMS), and Bachelor of Sc (H) Nursing programmes. In more than 540 medical schools around the nation, there are more than 80,000 MBBS seats available.
Since May 2019, the NTA has conducted the NEET-UG on behalf of the ministry of health and family welfare. NEET-UG was previously administered by the CBSE.
This year, 11.45 lakh of the 20.38 lakh applicants passed the test, an increase of 48% from the previous year.
According to the NTA, Uttar Pradesh had the most qualified candidates (1.39 lakh), followed by Maharashtra (1.31 lakh), and Rajasthan (more than a lakh).
According to the agency, Rajasthan is among the top 10 states in terms of population, while Uttar Pradesh and Maharashtra are the two most populous states in the nation.
According to the data, over 75,000 applicants from each of Kerala and Karnataka qualified for the exam, placing them both among the top five states.
The state of Tamil Nadu, which has been opposed to the centralised medical admission test, has the highest representation of candidates in the top 10. Eight candidates from Delhi, seven from Rajasthan, and six from Tamil Nadu were among the top 50.
On May 7, the NTA administered the test at 4,097 locations across 499 cities in India and abroad. Abu Dhabi, Bangkok, Colombo, Doha, Kathmandu, Kuala Lumpur, Lagos, Manama, Muscat, Riyadh, Sharjah, Singapore, Dubai, and Kuwait City were among the 14 places outside of India where it was done.
