Devendra Fadnavis, Maharashtra’s deputy Chief Minister and Home Minister, announced on Wednesday that the state government will ask schools to install CCTV cameras to prevent sexual attacks on female students.
He was replying to a call to attention motion introduced by Uma Khapare of the ruling BJP in the Legislative Council.
Khapare posed the topic in light of an instance in Mumbai in which a schoolgirl was sexually raped by two classmates who were also minors.
“Some rich schools do have CCTV network. But we will try and instruct the aided and non-aided schools to set up CCTV cameras as a deterrent measure. It would naturally discourage some people from indulging in such acts,” Fadnavis said.
Several schools have cafeterias nearby, and the ecology that has grown around them should be evaluated, as well as the influence on student behavior as a whole, he stated.
The state government would convene a combined meeting of the school education and home departments to develop an action plan, Fadnavis stated.
“The good touch-bad touch awareness program is currently underway in many schools, and it’s like creating a sixth sense in female pupils. “If someone is luring them, they should be able to detect it and save themselves,” he stated.
The government is also working to limit simple access to pornographic information on the Internet, according to the home minister.
