All eyes are now on the exit poll findings, which offer an early indication of who may gain the majority in the 288 assembly seats and who could become the state’s next chief minister, after voting for the much-anticipated Maharashtra Assembly elections came to an end on Wednesday, November 20.
The Shiv Sena (now split into factions led by Uddhav Thackeray and Eknath Shinde) and the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP), which also split into factions led by party patriarch Sharad Pawar and his nephew Ajit Pawar, who allied with the BJP to gain power, are two of Maharashtra’s most powerful parties as a result of the state’s previous turbulent political battle.
