In a major boost to the Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana (PMUY), the government has successfully released an additional 75 lakh LPG connections, fulfilling fresh requests by July 8, 2024. This achievement brings the total number of LPG connections under PMUY to an impressive 10.33 crore as of July 1, 2024.
Originally launched on May 1, 2016, PMUY aimed to provide deposit-free LPG connections to adult women from economically weaker households across India. The initial target of 8 crore connections was reached in September 2019. To cover the remaining households, the government introduced Ujjwala 2.0 in August 2021, releasing 1.60 crore connections by January 2023.
To further increase LPG coverage, the government has implemented a range of initiatives, including awareness campaigns, enrolment drives, and simplifying the process of obtaining connections. These efforts have significantly boosted LPG usage, with the per capita consumption among PMUY beneficiaries rising to 3.95 refills in the 2023-24 fiscal year.
Minister of State for Petroleum and Natural Gas, Shri Suresh Gopi, shared this update in a written reply in the Lok Sabha today, highlighting the transformative impact of PMUY on India’s rural and underprivileged households.
