Lal Bahadur Shastri’s Grandson Joins BJP

Vibhakar Shastri, the grandson of former Prime Minister Lal Bahadur Shastri, resigned from Congress on Wednesday. He then joined the Bharatiya Janata Party in the presence of Uttar Pradesh’s deputy Chief Minister, Brajesh Pathak.

“Hon’ble Congress President Shri Mallikarjun Kharge. Respected Sir, I hereby tender my resignation from the primary membership of Indian National Congress,” he wrote on X, an hour ahead of joining the BJP.

Later, when asked about his choice, he stated that he would be able to fulfill the former prime minister’s ideal of Jai Jawan, Jai Kisan under Prime Minister Narendra Modi, in a jab at the Congress party.

“I think under the leadership of PM Narendra Modi, I will be able to serve the country by further strengthening Lal Bahadur Shastri’s vision of ‘Jai Jawan, Jai Kisan’,” he said in an interview with ANI.

Lal Bahadur Shastri: who was he?

Shastri was a Gandhian who became India’s Prime Minister following the death of Jawaharlal Nehru in 1964. He was noted for his asceticism. He led India during the 1965 war against Pakistan.

The Congressman previously served as India’s home minister from 1961 to 1963.

Lal Bahadur Shastri coined the term Jai Jawan, Jai Kisan.

Vibhakar Shastri’s admission in the BJP coincided with the latter’s attacks on Nehru’s legacy. The party has criticized the first prime minister’s policies and blamed the country’s present difficulties on his administration’s purported errors.

The Congress party has lost key leaders in recent weeks. On Tuesday, former Maharashtra Chief Minister Ashok Chavan joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). Before that, Milind Deora had quit and joined Eknath Shinde’s Shiv Sena.
