The general secretary of the All India Congress Committee (AICC) and a Sirsa MP, Kumari Selja, has expressed be concerned about the worsening state of the cities of Gurugram and Faridabad in the state of Haryana.
“Faridabad is very close to Delhi but is nothing more than a haphazard urban slum with piles of garbage everywhere. The local MP is a minister at the Centre, but he does not see the condition of his own city. Look at the plight of the Millennium City, Gurugram. The minister from there has already lamented about the poor condition of Gurugram in an interview. The former CM is a big minister at the Centre now and he should listen to his colleagues. I know the Lok Sabha results disappointed you but you owe this to the people of Haryana for giving you 10 years,” said Selja. Selja’s power-packed statement in Parliament got a thumbs-up from Gurugram and Faridabad residents who lauded the Congress leader for raising their issues in the Lok Sabha saying that was the only way to the BJP government would hear them.
Kumari Selja highlighted several specific civic issues in Gurugram and Faridabad, including:
- Garbage Piles: Despite being labeled as Smart Cities, both Gurugram and Faridabad are plagued by piles of garbage, which are a major concern for residents.
- Lack of Facilities: The public in these cities is frustrated due to the lack of basic facilities, which has led to a deteriorating quality of life.
- Unfulfilled Announcements: Selja questioned the status of various projects and announcements made by the government, such as the metro project in Ballabgarh and the international airport in Hisar, which were supposed to be completed but remain incomplete.
- Swachh Bharat: Selja criticized the government for abandoning the Swachh Bharat initiative, which was meant to improve sanitation and cleanliness in the cities.
- Agnipath Scheme: She emphasized the need to scrap the Agnipath scheme, which she believes is unjust to both the Army and Agniveers.
These issues reflect the broader concerns about the state of urban infrastructure and governance in Gurugram and Faridabad.
With Rao Inderjit Singh putting his own state government under the scanner over civic crisis in Gurugram and even seeking a CBI inquiry against it, it got support from many Congress leaders. Rohtak MP and Congress leader Deepender Hooda took to social media, asking the BJP to first investigate its scams rather than sending ED behind the Congress MLAs. “Their own MP and minister seeks a CBI inquiry for a scam of around 350 crores and they are sending the ED behind the Congress MLAs,” wrote Hooda on X.
“Collapse of infrastructure” in twin cities
Aiming sharply at the current BJP government, Selja brought up the subject of Gurugram and Faridabad’s crumbling infrastructure. Even though Faridabad was renamed Smart City Faridabad, Selja claimed that the BJP was fixated on shifting places, despite the fact that the civic facilities in the twin cities had gotten worse.
