KL Rahul has been named the vice-captain for the ongoing Cricket World Cup 2023, following Hardik Pandya’s unfortunate ankle injury. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) made this decision in response to the confirmation from the International Cricket Council (ICC) regarding Pandya’s unavailability for the remainder of the tournament. Pandya had initially been selected as the vice-captain but was forced to miss several matches due to his injury sustained during the game against Bangladesh. With Pandya now ruled out, the senior selection committee has entrusted Rahul with the role of being Rohit Sharma’s deputy.
A reliable BCCI official conveyed, “KL Rahul’s appointment as vice-captain for the remainder of the World Cup was confirmed during a conversation with chairman of the selection committee, Ajit Agarkar, who is accompanying the team.” In his new role, Rahul, who had previously been participating in bowlers’ meetings as a specialist wicket-keeper, will now actively engage in all team meetings concerning both bowlers and batsmen. His insights and inputs will be highly valued in making critical decisions. One notable factor contributing to the selection committee’s choice of Rahul over pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah is his unique perspective as a wicket-keeper, allowing him to grasp the nuances of the game as it unfolds.
