Kerala Man Falls Victim to AI-Deep Fake Scam, Cheated of Rs 40,000; Police Issue Warning

A Kerala man was cheated out of Rs 40,000 by an AI-deep fake scam. Radhakrishnan, a Kozhikode native, received a video call from an unknown number, whose image resembled one of his former colleagues in Andhra Pradesh. The caller even mentioned their common friends’ names to gain his trust.

A victim received a fake video call from a scammer who requested Rs 40,000 for immediate assistance for a relative in hospital. The victim agreed to help and sent the amount online. However, the caller later asked for Rs 35,000, leading the victim to become suspicious and report the fraud to the police. The police tracked the transaction to a private bank in Maharashtra, where the account was frozen. This is the first cheating case in Kerala where scammers used AI technology to create fake videos using social media pictures and information about common friends.

Police have also issued a warning against the use of deep fakes powered by AI in online fraud. People have been advised to confirm the legitimacy of such inquiries. In order to prevent fraud, the police have also requested that citizens immediately report any instances of cheating to them by calling the helpline number 1930.
