Karnataka Government Launches Innovative Skilling Courses

The Karnataka government has introduced four new skill-building initiatives for students, with the goal of boosting language proficiency, increasing employability, and easing the transition for students into the workforce. The British Council has collaborated with the introduction of the programs. On February 26, 2024, the Karnataka State Higher Education Council (KSHEC) and the British Council inked an agreement to that effect.

The four skill-building initiatives include the “English Skills for Youth,” “Capacity Building Training for International Officers,” “Scholars for Outstanding Undergraduate Talent” (SCOUT) program, and a “Freemium Digital Library Wall” at Bengaluru University.

For this program, thirty students will be chosen by KSHEC, comprising two KSHEC officials and five students and one faculty member each from Bangalore University, Bengaluru City University, Gulbarga University Kalaburgi, Raichur University, Tumkur University, and Rani Channamma University. The students will spend two weeks immersed in learning at the University of East London from November 9–22.

Microsoft India and the British Council are partnering on this project to empower students at state-run engineering institutes. In 16 government engineering institutions covered by the KSHEC, English Skills for Youth will be implemented. 5,795 students will benefit from this program in semesters II and III. The Microsoft Learning Management System (LMS) will be used by students to complete 40 hours of self-paced coursework. In addition, 30 hours of in-person or blended English Practice Club sessions will be provided.

The KSHEC has selected 28 institutions and more than 56 participants for a workshop aimed at supporting Indian universities’ internationalization efforts as part of this initiative.

State Higher Education Minister M C Sudhakar emphasized during a speech at a KSHEC-hosted event that working with UK universities promotes innovation, mobility, and future success. Bengaluru City University’s Freemium Digital Library Wall rollout improves access to education even further by providing teachers and students with useful materials.
