Karnataka Government Approves Three Annual Exams for Class 10th and 12th

The Karnataka State Examination and Assessment Board (KSEAB) is now authorized to conduct Exams 1, 2, and 3, a total of three annual exams, for students in Classes 10 (SSLC) and 12 (second PUC), according to an official order released on Thursday by the Karnataka government. The decree will go into force in the current academic year, 2023–2024. This would result in the elimination of the SSLC and second PUC supplementary test concepts by the Karnataka school education department.

The major goal of the examination reform is to help students de-stress and improve their overall performance at both levels.

At the moment, if a student has qualified for the second PUC examination and is dissatisfied with the results, there is a provision to reject the results of the annual examination and only the results of the supplementary examination are considered as the student’s final marks, without taking into account the results of the previous examination.

The board introduced a remedial system that allows students to keep their best result from the first, second, and third tests on the grounds that it was a “student unfriendly mechanism.”

The opportunity intends to improve students’ opportunities for higher education and employment. The move is also considered as a factor in improving Karnataka’s Gross Enrolment Ratio (GER) in higher education.

According to the government’s recommendations in the order, students with an annual class attendance of 75% can take the SSLC and second PUC yearly examinations. Those who have less than 75% attendance will not be allowed to take the exam.

New students and private candidates taking the exam for the first time in all disciplines must attempt the main exam (exam 1) and are not permitted to sit for exams 2 and 3 right after the main exam. The board has also established a one-time examination fee for the annual examination and the distribution of mark sheets to students who have completed SSLC and Class 12. If the student participates in the next tests, the board has advised staff not to collect the fee a second time.

Students in SSLC and second PUC who do not pass the major exams must sit for the subsequent exams according to the current examination system. After the conclusion of the relevant exams, administrators will need to upload the students’ scores into the DigiLocker system.

According to the board’s provisional schedule, the first exam for class 12 will be given between March 1 and March 25, the second between May 15 and June 5, and the third between July 12 and July 30. For class 10, exams 1 and 2 are tentatively set for March 30 and April 15; exams 3 and 4 are tentatively scheduled for July 29 and August 5.
