Traffic routes have changed as a result of actions taken by the traffic police in Delhi-NCR to ensure the security of pilgrims traveling on the Kanwar Yatra. There is more traffic on the highways that pilgrims traveling back from Haridwar pass through, including Meerut, Ghaziabad, Noida, Delhi, and Faridabad.
What kind of traffic restrictions are in effect because of the Kanwar Yatra in Delhi NCR?
- More traffic police officers have been stationed close to Okhla Barrage to control traffic and avoid jams, particularly during rush hour when the route becomes narrower.
- To ensure the safety of pilgrims participating in the Kanwar Yatra, the Noida traffic police have closed two of the four lanes between Okhla Barrage and Okhla Bird Sanctuary from July 28 to August 4.
- Noida is in charge of around four kilometers of the pilgrimage path, which runs from Mayur Vihar past the Shani shrine and the Okhla Bird Sanctuary to Kalindi Kunj.
- Traffic from the Delhi to Noida side was diverted onto the two right lanes due to barriers erected near the Sector 126 police station at Kalindi Kunj, resulting in bottlenecks and congestion.
- The Delhi-Meerut Expressway is closed to large vehicles, according to the Uttar Pradesh police. On August 5, vehicles will be rerouted until 8 p.m.; starting on July 29, all vehicles—private as well as public—between Delhi and Meerut will be subject to restrictions.
Delhi minister Atishi has announced the establishment of large camps at Kashmiri Gate in Delhi to accommodate at least 2,000 Kanwariyas. The camps are equipped with waterproof tents, beds, and tables to withstand rain. Food and medical assistance are also provided, with a doctor and medical team available 24 hours a day. An ambulance is stationed outside the camp for serious health issues.
People go in droves to Shiv temples
For Hindus, the month of Sawan holds great significance as it is devoted to Lord Shiva. Usually occurring in July or August, this holy month is a time for prayer, fasting, and pilgrimages to the deity of transformation and destruction.
Carrying gangajal, devotees travel to temples to offer prayers, including Jharkhandi Mahadev in Gorakhpur, Kali Paltan in Meerut, Kashi Vishwanath in Varanasi, and Mahakaleshwar in Ujjain.
According to Drik Panchang, Sawan that began on July 22 and will end on August 19 this year.
