The former foreign secretary Kanwal Sibal was named as the new chancellor of Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) on Monday.
“The vice-chancellor on behalf of the JNU community heartily welcomes our new chancellor Kanwal Sibal, former foreign secretary. We are extremely happy and looking forward to work under his guidance,” JNU wrote in a post on X (formerly Twitter).
NITI Aayog member and departing chancellor Vijay Kumar Saraswat was also thanked by the university.
Former Indian ambassador to Turkey, Egypt, France, and Russia Sibal has worked in a variety of roles for the federal government. From 2008 to 2010, he also served as a member of India’s National Security Advisory Board.
He is on the board of the East-West Institute in New York and is a member of the executive council of the Vivekanand International Foundation. The former official serves as both the chairman of the Forum of Strategic and Security Studies and a consultant to the US-India Strategic Partnership Forum.
