The Japanese Government has invited Indian students pursuing research for scholarships under the MEXT scholarship programme for the academic year 2025. The application submission deadline is May 3, 2024.
Scholarship benefits include an allowance depending on the course enrolled in, a supplemental regional allowance of 2,000 yen or 3,000 yen per month for grantees studying or conducting research in specially designated regions, and a suspension for extended absences.
Students receiving preparatory education and non-regular students receive 143,000 yen (approximately ₹ 77,358) per month. Regular students enrolled in master’s or professional degree courses receive 144,000 yen (approximately ₹ 77,902) per month, while regular students enrolled in doctoral courses receive 145,000 yen (approximately ₹ 78,441) per month. MEXT covers entrance examinations, matriculation, and tuition at universities, but the entrance examination fee will be borne by grantees if they cannot proceed to the master’s course.
Application guidelines for the MEXT scholarship program require applicants to be enrolled in a master’s course, a doctoral course, or a professional graduate course at a graduate school, or be conducting research in a specialized field at an undergraduate department, graduate school, or institute attached to a university. Fields of study must be subjects that applicants can study and research in graduate courses at Japanese universities.
Applicants must have been born on or after April 2, 1990, with exceptions for cases where MEXT deems the applicant could not apply due to their country’s circumstances. Personal circumstances, such as financial situation, family circumstances, state of health, or circumstances related to the applicant’s university or place of employment, will not be considered for exceptions.
Applicants must satisfy any one of the following conditions for admission to either a master’s or doctoral course at a Japanese graduate school. Master’s course/Doctoral course applicants must have completed 16 years of school education in countries other than Japan, completed a program with a standard study period of three years or more at universities or equivalent educational institutions in countries other than Japan, received an overseas degree equivalent to a master’s degree or professional degree, or have been involved in research study at universities or research centers for two years or more and recognized.
The scholarship period for non-regular students arriving in Japan during the April or October term will last from April 2025 until the end of March 2027, with the first six months being a term of preparatory education of the Japanese language.
