Jamia Millia Islamia Yet to Decide on CUET Implementation for 2024-25

According to a senior Jamia Millia Islamia official, the institution has not yet made a decision regarding the acceptance of Common institution Entrance Test (CUET) results for its undergraduate and graduate programs.

The official, who wished to remain anonymous, told PTI that the institution will only accept CUET scores for 15 UG and 5 PG courses as the administration has not been able to decide how to fully adopt CUET.

According to the source, deans from every department recently met with Acting Vice-Chancellor Eqbal Hussain to discuss implementing CUET for admissions in the next academic year. The official did, however, he official added that a unanimous decision on fully embracing CUET could not be reached during the meeting.

While Jawaharlal Nehru University and Delhi University, two other central institutions in Delhi, have adopted CUET for admissions in the next academic year, Jamia Millia Islamia is anticipated to continue using the present entrance examination method for the majority of its courses.

Last year, Jamia announced the partial adoption of CUET for 20 undergraduate and postgraduate courses, citing time constraints and academic limitations as the reasons preventing the university from conducting admissions entirely through CUET.

The varsity had said that it plans to adopt CUET for all its courses from the 2024-25 academic year onwards.

What Students Have to Say About It

The institution has not yet registered on the Samarth site, which is particularly made for the registration of admissions into various programs at Central and State Universities, despite the fact that there is just one month left before the planned CUET examinations for postgraduate admissions in March.

‘I wish to study MA Media Honours at Jamia Millia Islamia, however, the option is not available on the Samarth portal,” PTI reported a postgraduate aspirant as saying.

”If Jamia was taking admissions through CUET for its PG courses, it would have saved us a lot of time and provided more options for students as we wouldn’t have to prepare for Jamia’s entrance exam separately,” says another student.

According to UGC guidelines, all central universities are mandated to admit students to undergraduate and postgraduate courses based on CUET scores. The registration for CUET is presently ongoing, and the deadline has been extended until January 31, as indicated in an official notification.

Official information states that Jamia Millia Islamia provides 81 postgraduate courses in addition to 42 undergraduate courses.
