James Fuller’s Costly Over: Most Expensive in T20 History

In the high-octane world of T20 cricket, explosive batting often comes at the expense of bowlers, leading to remarkable statistics. New Zealand pacer James Fuller found himself etching his name in the record books during a quarter-final match in the Twenty20 Cup in 2012. Fuller’s over, representing English County side Gloucestershire, proved to be the most expensive in T20 history, conceding a staggering 38 runs against Sussex.

The over unfolded in a dramatic fashion as Fuller faced compatriot Scott Styris. It started with two no-balls, both racing to the boundary for fours. Notably, tournament rules dictated a two-run penalty for each no-ball instead of the conventional one, instantly piling up 12 runs without a legal delivery bowled. Despite a dot ball, Styris then hammered the next two deliveries for sixes, followed by a four and a six. The over concluded with Sussex amassing a total of 230/4, eventually winning the match by 39 runs.

In the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2021, a parallel run-fest occurred when Harshal Patel of Royal Challengers Bangalore conceded 37 runs in an over against Chennai Super Kings. Ravindra Jadeja’s onslaught, comprising five sixes, a four, and a double, contributed to this joint-highest run over in IPL history. Interestingly, another instance of 37 runs being conceded in a single over happened in 2011 when Kochi Tuskers Kerala’s Prasanth Parameswaran faced the wrath of Chris Gayle from Royal Challengers Bangalore.

The international T20 arena also witnessed memorable moments, with the record for the most expensive over in T20 Internationals being 36 runs. Yuvraj Singh achieved this feat by striking six consecutive sixes off Stuart Broad during the T20 World Cup in 2007. Yuvraj’s spectacular performance helped India amass a total of 218/4, securing victory by 18 runs.

In 2021, West Indies’ Kieron Pollard replicated Yuvraj’s achievement, smashing 36 runs in one over against Sri Lanka. The all-rounder’s six straight sixes off Akila Dananjaya showcased his explosive batting prowess.

Cricket’s T20 format continues to provide thrilling moments, with bowlers and batters engaging in battles that redefine the limits of the game. As records tumble, each match adds a new chapter to the ever-evolving narrative of this dynamic and entertaining form of the sport.
