In the midst of the ongoing conflict between Israel and Hamas in the Gaza Strip, Israel’s Heritage Minister, Amichai Eliyahu, made a controversial statement about the use of an atomic bomb. When asked if an atomic bomb should be employed against the enclave, Eliyahu responded that it was “one of the possibilities.”
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu swiftly condemned Eliyahu’s statement, emphasizing that Israel and the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) are committed to adhering to the highest international standards to protect innocent civilians. He reaffirmed their commitment to these principles until victory is achieved.
It’s important to note that Amichai Eliyahu is not a part of the security cabinet responsible for wartime decision-making, nor does he have authority over the war cabinet overseeing the conflict with Hamas.
During the interview in which he made the controversial comment, Eliyahu expressed his opposition to allowing humanitarian aid into Gaza, drawing a parallel with not providing aid to Nazis. He asserted that there are no uninvolved civilians in Gaza.
Furthermore, Eliyahu voiced support for reclaiming Gaza’s territory and restoring the settlements there. When questioned about the fate of Palestinian civilians, he suggested that they should find a solution on their own, even if it meant relocating to other places like Ireland or deserts.
Eliyahu also stated that the northern part of the Gaza Strip should not exist, and he condemned anyone displaying Palestinian or Hamas flags, suggesting that they should not be allowed to continue living on Earth.
The conflict between Israel and Hamas has persisted, with significant casualties and extensive damage to both sides. Israel has continued its military operations, including ground battles, despite calls for a ceasefire from Arab countries and the growing humanitarian crisis in Gaza. The conflict has resulted in the loss of thousands of lives, primarily civilians, and the destruction of infrastructure in Gaza.
